Speaking to a Sniper about COVID-19

Who you’re talking to dictates what you say. Review our Communication Styles if you haven’t already. And remember: These examples show communication skills, and do not indicate correct or incorrect viewpoints.

Choose the communication style of the person you’re speaking to:

If you hear them say…

“So what does the family COVIdiot think about that one?”

👍 Try this…

“Oh, that’s a clever term. This COVIDiot is going to keep enjoying dinner. We can talk later.”

  • Snipers want to get a rise, often in front of others. Deflect the conversation until you’re ready to engage, and if you do, talk in private.
👎 Avoid this…

“I think for myself unlike all you sheeples.”

  • Avoid using insults to make your point.

If you hear them say…

“Did you learn that at the elite college you went to?”

👍 Try this…

“Is there a point you’re trying to make?”

  • Most of the time, snipers aren’t looking for meaningful engagement. Instead put the ball back in their court.
👎 Avoid this…

“At least I understand science.”

  • Don’t take the bait or you’ll play into their stereotypes.

If you hear them say…

“Did Joe Biden tell you to wear that mask to dinner?”

👍 Try this…

“Yeah, he texted me right before I arrived…”

  • Use humor to disarm your Sniper. If you want to have a serious conversation, follow it up with an invitation to talk in private.
👎 Avoid this…

“Did Donald Trump tell you there are microchips in the COVID vaccine?”

  • Remember, Snipers want to get a rise out of you in front of others. Save a serious conversation for when you’re alone.
